The theme of the TV drama, Six Feet under, is life and death. Each character struggles to come to terms with living and dying.

The TV show begins with death of Nathaniel Fisher, who died in an accident while he was driving to pick up his son at the airport. Ruth Fisher was first to receive the news of her husband’s death. She could not handle the news and became depressed. David, who was second to hear the news, was able to hold back his emotions. He was shocked by the sudden death, as he has to handle everything by himself. Nate, who was arriving from Seattle, was able to handle the news. He was calm, and was having an affair with Branda, who he met at the airport. Clair was shocked by the news, since she was small and she was under the influence of drugs. After the death of Nathaniel, each character began seeing illusions of Nathaniel.

After the burial of Nathaniel, the Fisher family faced many problems. The first problem started, when Kroehner Service Corp. bid to buy the funeral home from the family. The rest of the problems started after the attorney read the will of Nathaniel. David was faced by the fact that Nate would get half the business, and have the stress of running the funeral home. He started to spend more time with his gay partner, Keith. Clair was told that her father had saved money for college, and was trying to make a decision whether to go into the military, and live with Gabriel-her boyfriend-or got to college. Nate, knowing that he now owns half the business, was thinking to run the business just as his father wanted him to do. Ruth, who is depressed, struggles cope with life, and trying to decide what to do with the money left by her husband. Federico did not care about the death of Nathaniel. He is happy with his life.
